What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a type of technology that’s part of a new generation of programs called “AI language models”. AI stands for “artificial intelligence”, which means the program is designed to think and act like a person, but it’s actually a computer program.

ChatGPT is especially good at understanding and generating natural language, which is the way people normally speak and write. It’s been trained on a huge amount of text, which allows it to learn and understand how words and phrases are used in different contexts.

One of the really cool things about ChatGPT is that it can generate responses that sound like they were written by a human. This is because the program has been designed to mimic the way people use language, so it can respond in a way that feels natural and conversational.

There are lots of potential uses for ChatGPT, including helping people with language translation, answering questions, and even writing stories or articles. For example, a company might use ChatGPT to help with customer service, or a student might use it to practice their language skills.

However, some people have raised concerns about the ethics of using AI language models like ChatGPT. One concern is that these programs could be used to spread misinformation or propaganda, as they can generate text that sounds very convincing. There are also concerns about privacy and data security, as these programs need to access and analyze large amounts of data to work properly.

Despite these concerns, the creators of ChatGPT and other AI language models are continuing to explore new ways to use this technology. As computers and other devices become more integrated into our daily lives, ChatGPT and other similar programs will likely play an increasingly important role in how we communicate and interact with technology.

AI has become almost indistinguishable from human writing. In fact, up until this paragraph, this story was written by ChatGPT. We gave the free program the prompt, “Write a news story titled ‘What is ChatGPT?’ at a 10th-grade reading level.” The article was generated in a matter of seconds.

The creators of ChatGPT, a company called OpenAI, have been developing the neural network that functions as the “brain” of the program since 2018. What makes ChatGPT special is its ability to use logic and reasoning. For example, because the prompt we gave the program said, “at a 10th-grade reading level,” ChatGPT used a simpler vocabulary and changed our original prompt to now include grammatical errors. In other words, the program intentionally made mistakes so that its work would feel more human.

There has been growing concern about how to, if at all, to regulate AI. The program, in conjunction with another AI  called QuillBot which paraphrases text, can make cheating on written assignments undetectable. Yet, there remains significant pushback with many claiming it’s easy to tell when a program writes something. What do you think? Did it fool you?
