The UT System Board of Regents approved a $300 million endowment to help students at UT System schools pay for college. The endowment will allow all seven UT System schools, including UT Tyler, to expand tuition support for eligible students.

“Today’s action by the Board of Regents means that even more Texans will be able to earn a UT degree tuition-free,” Chancellor James B. Milliken said in a press release. “The Promise Plus endowment ensures that our high-quality UT institutions will remain among the most affordable in the nation.”

The Board of Regents approved the “Promise Plus” program on Feb. 24. The program will generate about $15 million this year, which will be distributed to the seven institutions to provide tuition relief, according to the press release. Individual institutions, such as UT Tyler, will receive a minimum of $1 million this year based on the number of students enrolled with financial needs.

“We are committed to increasing the affordability of a college education for more Texans by lowering the out-of-pocket cost of a UT degree for qualified students,” Board Chairman Kevin P. Eltife said in a press release. “This is an investment in our students, in public higher education, and [in] the state of Texas.”

To qualify for the Promise Plus program, students must be full-time undergraduates, Texas residents who fill out the FASFA and eligible for need-based aid.

Chancellor Milliken, Chairman Eltife and the regents will be visiting all seven campuses over the next month to announce each institution’s Promise Plus allocation, according to the press release.
