Falling Limbs Pose Risk on Campus

The recent storm has left many large branches and trees down across campus. School officials say more limbs could come down and are asking students to stay away from marked off areas. Photo by NATHAN WITT.

Unhealthy tree limbs may be compromised due to severe weather. Exercise caution when going underneath large limbs. The strong wind and rain have already brought down several limbs on campus, and more are expected to fall. It may be difficult to distinguish dangerous branches by looking at them. Severe weather is expected to continue throughout the week. The Maintenance staff advises students to avoid going under large tree limbs if possible. A creaking sound can sometimes be heard right before a branch breaks, but not always. A maintenance staff member was hit by a falling branch while cleaning up debris this morning. Tree limbs as large as seventeen feet have fallen on campus.

Limbs and debris may be obstructing pathways. The university is working to clear all paths now. If using a wheelchair or other accessibility resources, consider having someone accompany you on campus or have your route checked ahead of time. Small and large branches can be expected to fall all week.
