After almost four years, Swoop has gotten a glow up.
Before the start of the fall semester, the University of Texas at Tyler shared that the mascot was redesigned for a fiercer look.
University officials said they received feedback from students and fans that Swoop’s previous look seemed too “friendly.” His previous look, which was launched in 2020, was reconsidered because he represents a large part of UT Tyler’s athletics.

“Our new design amps up the ferocity and aims to match the competitive spirit of UT Tyler Patriot Athletics,” Jonathan McSwain, senior director of creative services, said. “We want to make sure that every student, parent, faculty, staff, and community member feels that Patriot Pride when they see Swoop.”
In comparison to four years ago, McSwain said the university has gone through unprecedented growth—including a rebrand—and Swoop was in need of a makeover to reflect that.
“We wanted to make sure that Swoop continues to evolve with UT Tyler,” McSwain said. “And make sure that he is looking fun, fresh and fierce.”
