Many high school students search for a program and university that suits their needs during their transition to college. The annual UT Tyler Art Department High School Recruiting event assisted students with this process.
The event took place Sept. 27 in the art complex. Two-hundred visitors from regional high schools toured the complex and met UT Tyler art students.
The event included demonstrations in iron pouring and ceramics and Raku firing. There was also workshops in painting, drawing and printmaking. Participants viewed a variety of the art department’s features and created art.
Many screen-printed bandanas worked with clay and painted postcards in workshops. This allowed them to take a piece of the clay home. Students also got hands-on experience with new materials and tools in multiple subjects allowing them to discover a possible new interest.
A short art lecture gave students a glimpse at art history taught here.
“I love encouraging younger people to do art because it brings joy to my life, and I think it’s a wonderful thing,” said Jaclyn Walker, a paint workshop volunteer.
The Department of Art and Art History staff and faculty aided students. Volunteers helped in demonstrations and encouraged students to try new materials and techniques in workshops.
Art student Audrey Jeanes says, “I hope that a few of the kids coming in will see our program and decide to come here.”
