Tyler is Texas’ third city to be designated a tourism friendly community.

The city took part in a multi-step certification process designed to encourage communities to pursue tourism across the state, according to Tourism Friendly Texas. Gov. Greg Abbott launched the program in January 2024 as a way to support state commerce.

“The financial impact of millions of visitors to Texas destinations is critical to both the state and local economies,” reads a statement issued by Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell. “The Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation is an opportunity for communities across Texas to show their commitment to tourism as an economic development strategy and continue to develop the many diverse attractions and experiences that draw visitors to the Lone Star State.”

Abbott congratulated the city, describing the designation as an avenue for job growth and economic development. He added that the tourism industry in Texas generates more than $193.8 billion in economic impact.

“Every region of this great state offers endless opportunities to experience the natural beauty, rich history, and true Texas hospitality that draws visitors to our communities large and small,” Abbott said in a press release. “I congratulate the City of Tyler and Visit Tyler on earning this designation.”

Fennell noted Tyler’s famous rose garden as one of the tourist attractions, lauding the city’s contributions to Texas’s travel economy.

“From its famous rose gardens to its thriving arts scene and charming downtown, Tyler has long been a place where visitors can experience the best of East Texas hospitality,” Fennell said. “We are honored to recognize the city’s continued leadership in tourism through this designation.”

Former state Rep. Matt Schaefer (R-Tyler) thanked Travel Texas for recognizing the city’s contribution to tourism in the state. He joined Abbott in praising Tyler’s tourist attractions while looking forward to what is to come.

“We all know Tyler is a special place,” Schaefer said. “The rest of the country has caught on too. There are more and more reasons to visit Tyler every year.”
