After construction in the summer of 2025, the new concrete steps at the University of Texas at Tyler are finally finished. A view of Harvey Lake and the Harvey Deck can be seen from the steps in front of Stewart Hall, which links to the Hudnall-Pirtle-Roosth Building and makes it simpler for teachers and students to walk. Many on campus express satisfaction with the outcome.
Yanira Oliveras, professor of curriculum and instruction, said the new addition has enhanced the campus and created a space for the University of Texas at Tyler community to gather.
“The new stairs have really brightened and modernized the center of campus! Not only do they make the area look more open and welcoming, but they also give students, staff, and faculty a great spot to hang out, connect, and enjoy being outdoors together.”
She also added that the stairs capture the true meaning of what the University of Texas at Tyler is moving toward: “This is a great start to the master plan becoming a reality and shaping the future of our campus, reflecting UT Tyler’s commitment to fostering student success and strengthening our sense of community.”
Colleen Swain, associate provost for academic success and dean of undergraduate studies, said she is happy about the versatility and charm of the stairs, and she mentions a wide perspective on the many possibilities for using the new steps.
“Our new stairs overlooking the lake are a fantastic addition to our campus. This marvelous venue allows faculty to take learning outside, creating an inspiring environment for discussions, philosophical debates, mock trials, poetry slams, and more.”

Student Laura Hudson said the new steps make campus look stylish. “They are nice. It’s a good place to take pictures.”
Looking ahead, the stairs will play a role in bringing students and faculty together for classes, events, and college life.
