Last Thursday, “Once On This Island” premiered in the Cowan theater.
The UT Tyler School of Performing Arts staged the performance.
I am not one of the biggest fans of musicals, but I found “Once On This Island” to be more entertaining than most musical. The cast was very talented, and I could see they practiced a lot for the play. All of them had beautiful voices and singing went on and on, as if it was the easiest thing to do.
The stage looked great, with an exotic background of palms and sea. The lighting of the stage was also well done, as depending on the scene, different lights would appear. The story itself was a bit harder to understand without reading the synopsis which was handed out to me before entering the theater.
I haven’t had a chance to see a play since COVID-19 started, and it was a nice night out. I would recommend anyone who wants to take a break from studying or work to look for upcoming events and go see them. Here is a link for information regarding upcoming events: www.uttyler.edu/music
