Multimedia journalist Macy Maxwell chronicled some of the hands-on training cadets receive in the Fire Academy at Tyler Academy at Tyler Junior College.

Those who complete the course receive certifications in fire fighting and dealing with hazardous materials by meeting standards set by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
