Debate team Wins Tournament in Portland

UT Tyler won the prestigious Steve Hunt Classic debate tournament held the weekend of Oct. 8 at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. 

The varsity team of Hunter Parish and Josh Smith had a 4-1 record in preliminary rounds and won the elimination rounds, debate coach Joseph Provencher announced. 

Parish was ranked fifth Overall and Smith was ranked fourth.

Two freshmen first-year debaters, Angie Carroll and Harlin Dean won the junior varsity division. Dean was ranked the No. 1 junior varsity speaker at the tournament. 

“The team is excited to have such a strong finish from two first-year competitors at their very first tournament no less,” Provencher said. “The future is bright at UT Tyler debate.”

Among the top debate programs with debaters at the tournament were Rice University, Whitman College, William Jewell College and The University of California at Berkeley.
