Students living in Liberty Landing face the challenge of crossing Old Omen road to and from campus. For some, this has proven to be a challenge.

The crosswalk has a light that turns red following the push of a button by pedestrians needing to walk across. When the countdown for students to cross is over, the red light turns off, which allows drivers to continue.

“One day, I was walking home from class when I noticed some girls walking in front of me,” freshman Kyleigh Loftin said. “They pressed the button and waited for the sign to turn to the white walking picture.  When it did, and they started walking, a car went right through the light.”

Student find that the drivers are impatient and think they can get through the light before someone crosses the street. Students say drivers not waiting for pedestrians can be dangerous.

“It is unsafe when people don’t stop at the crosswalk because students are coming and going all day long,” student Avery Clinton said. “Sometimes cars quickly brake and then drive off in a hurry, and I think it is dangerous because they aren’t taking the time to watch for pedestrians.”

Sometimes, the drivers will quickly speed through the stoplight before a student makes it to the other side, say those who use the crosswalk.

“Most of the time when I am walking to campus from Liberty Landing, the cars will stop but not long enough for you to safely make it across the road,” Loftin said. “It makes me mad because what if someone were to get hit?”
