In a stunning move that has shaken up the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers have completed a high-profile trade with the Dallas Mavericks, acquiring Luka Dončić in exchange for Anthony Davis.
This league-altering deal, finalized on Feb. 2 includes forward Maxi Kleber and center Markieff Morris joining the Lakers, while the Mavericks gain Davis, guard Max Christie and a future first-round draft pick. Additionally, the Utah Jazz are involved in a three-team deal, acquiring Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second-round picks.
TRADE BREAKDOWN
● Lakers Receive: Luka Dončić, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris
● Mavericks Receive: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, 2029 First-Round Pick
● Jazz Receive: Jalen Hood-Schifino, Two 2025 Second-Round Picks
While Dončić is sidelined due to a minor ankle sprain, his immense talent and potential are enough to make him the future of the Lakers. The Lakers—who have relied on LeBron James to carry the team—now have a young superstar who can seamlessly carry the load in the impending post-LeBron era.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks have made a bold move, prioritizing defense by bringing in Davis, a perennial defensive player of the year candidate. This decision signals a new direction for Dallas, looking to balance out their roster while still maintaining playoff competitiveness.
“I believe that defense wins championships,” Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison told ESPN. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”
