UT Tyler women’s basketball hosted Texas A&M Kingsville Feb. 13 for their second to last home game of the season. They were victorious by beating the Javelinas 61-54.

In the opening four minutes, both teams started slow with a lot of running back and forth due to missing baskets and turning the ball over.

The Patriots began to pick up their offense, and forward Lovisa Hevinder was a big part of this by hitting four 3-pointers in the first quarter.

UT Tyler’s offense was clicking on all cylinders to close out the quarter. They went on a 15-0 run in the last 4:28 of it.

The opening minutes of the second quarter resembled what was on display in the first quarter’s opening minutes. Both teams struggled to get a shot to fall and had a hard time getting a consistent rhythm going.

Although there wasn’t much action in this quarter, Kingsville guard Abby Bala made a mid-range buzzer beater to go into halftime.

To begin the second half, Kingsville came out looking sharper by hitting a few 3s to close the gap. UT Tyler immediately began to apply pressure on defense to try and force errors. Kingsville continued to fight back and played hard defense against UT Tyler.

Despite facing a tougher defense, UT Tyler bailed themselves out by making a bunch of tough shots.

To end the third quarter, Kingsville again made a buzzer beater, this time though it was Kaycee Groves who made the mid-range jumper.

The fourth quarter started slow. Only a couple of baskets and a pair of free throws were made between both teams in the first four minutes.

UT Tyler began imposing their strong defense again and started to make more shots too.

Kingsville kept the scoring close. In the final few minutes, they found themselves down by only 6 points. UT Tyler showed they’re a good team and played solid defense which made it hard for Kingsville to score.

Kingsville kept fouling UT Tyler to try and get them to miss some free throws. Despite this strategy, UT Tyler pulled away and won by 7 points.

After the game, Kevin Hernandez, a construction management major, used the following words to describe how UT Tyler played this game: “Fast, physical, and sharpshooting.”
