Brooke Mullins, a junior soccer player at The University of Texas at Tyler, was named the Lone Star Conference Academic Player of the Year for the fall 2024 semester. This award is given to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically. Mullins is  outstanding example of what it means to achieve excellence in both areas.

As a key player on the soccer team, Mullins has been successful while maintaining a 4.0 GPA as a business management major with a minor in pre-law. The Academic Player of the Year award recognizes her dedication to her sport, her studies, and her ability to balance the demands of both.

Q: How does it feel to receive such an honor?
A: It feels good. It’s definitely an honor being up against so many different players in the conference, so it feels good to know that I competed well against them.

Q: Balancing athletics and academics can be challenging. How do you manage your time effectively between practices, games, and studying?
A: It’s all about time management so I like to look at my schedule as far as when I have class times, practice times and then outside of that just manage your time with spending time with friends and being able to get your work done as well.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of your journey as a student-athlete?
A: I think just being part of a close knit family and a team, um, well simultaneously, like getting an education is the most rewarding part.

Q: As an athlete with such an impressive academic record, what advice would you give to younger students or aspiring student-athletes?
A: I think the most important part is time management, like I said earlier, um as long as you spend enough time, like doing your work and getting your work done, um and then you also have time to make friends and spend time with your social life as well. It’s all about how you manage your time.

Q:  What are your goals for the future, both academically and athletically?
A: My goal is athletically, just keep excelling in soccer and finish my last year of college sports next year. And then academically, I planned to go to law school and complete that and then become a lawyer.
