A UT Tyler Canvas course designed to guide students through spring 2027 registration became an unexpected forum for student discussion, with posts ranging from questions about turning off notifications to invitations to play video games.
UT Tyler has been pushing enrollment efforts ahead of the upcoming spring semester. On Canvas, the platform students use to access classes, homework, and other class-related materials, the university created a course dedicated to enrollment efforts.
The Canvas course was designed to guide students through Spring 2027 enrollment, including registration dates and required steps. However, its discussion boards were left open, allowing students to create their own discussion threads rather than simply view existing posts.

Discussion topics included genuine questions about how to disable notifications from these discussion creations, as well as asking people to hop on Overwatch or Call of Duty.
Notifications about these discussion creations have flooded many students’ inboxes.
As of writing this story, UT Tyler has disabled discussion creation for this class in Canvas. For privacy, students’ names have been censored. As they weren’t originally.
