The new edition of Inspiring Minds, UT Tyler’s literary magazine, recently hit the stands. This is the fourth volume of the Talon Student Media publication, and this year’s theme is “History Repeats Itself.”

The volume pays homage to John “Danny” Mogle, the Talon staff adviser, who was a college student, writer and editor himself — just like the current team who made this edition possible.

“(The inspiration for the theme was) a photo of our staff adviser, Danny Mogle, whenever he was at UT Austin, doing the same exact thing that we’re doing now,” said Karleigh Yancy, the magazine editor.

Yancy also designed the magazine’s cover.

“With the cover, I really wanted a very minimal feel to it, because I wanted to go in a completely different direction from the past Inspired Minds,” Yancy said.

The front cover features an artistic black-and-white photo of Santiago Nuñez, a member of the magazine’s submission committee and the Patriot Talon’s multimedia editor.

“I wanted something a little more toned down (for the cover design) to let the words speak a little more,” said Yancy. “With the movement of his face, he’s looking from the past to the future.”

Although the cover is toned down, the inside is quite the opposite. When turning to the first page, the reader is hit with a drastic color change as the magazine switches from black and white to bright yellow.

The magazine features dozens of poems, short stories, photos and photo illustrations. Topics range from dark areas, such as heartbreak and addiction, to lighthearted pieces on dogs.

With so many great pieces, choosing a favorite would be difficult for any editor.

“I love them all, but personally, one of my favorite takes on the theme as a whole is ‘Dog History’ written by Katherine Robinson,” Yancy said.

Copies of Inspired Minds are available at any of the orange Patriot Talon stands scattered throughout campus.
